The New FDEV Virtual Library

Dear faculty,

I am glad no one noticed that I missed the Tuesday Tip last week….. next time I miss one, you get extra credit if you notice and email me!!

Overall, though, I think that this new tool we have in Faculty Development was worth waiting for… so let me unveil it (virtually) to you!

The FDEV team worked incredibly hard last semester to turn our original FDEV Virtual library into a searchable tool that can provide a much more interactive experience to those faculty who are looking for some resources for their research or their classroom.

The new FDEV Virtual Library allows you to search books by topic (assessment, curriculum, equity & diversity, etc.) or by title, and we have included a thumbnail photo for each book, in case you have more of a visual memory like me!

In partnership with the Meriam Library, we have selected a list of electronic publications that cover key areas of faculty interests. The best part? all books are accessible to our campus community via the Ebook Central database so you can access them through a simple login (and the same applies to your students, in case you want to assign some readings in your classes).

We hope you will take some time to explore these resources and let us know if there are books we should include in our virtual library!

Inspired 2022

Sent on behalf of Jodi Shepherd, Interim Dean of the Meriam Library, and the Meriam Library and CSE Inspired Team.

Tuesday Tip: Take a few minutes to recognize your research and creative activities for Inspired 2022.

Event: April 6th 3:30-5:00

Inspired 2022 will be a virtual event hosted on Zoom from 3:30-5:00 on Wednesday, April 6th. During this event we’ll recognize Lantis awardees,  FRAS awards, Early Career Community Engagement award and  Our Civically Engaged Scholar Award, among others. While Inspired 2022 looks a little different this year, we are excited to celebrate the awardees and the work that has gone into research and creative activities in the past year. The decision to hold the event online was a result of COVID uncertainties and  4th floor upgrades

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to host Inspired 2020 and Inspired 2021 because of  COVID-19.  We will acknowledge past recipients during this year’s virtual event.  Recognition of awardees will also be on display in the library during the month of April.

We hope you’ll join us to celebrate the awardees who are being recognized for their achievements.

In-Person Exhibit: Library throughout April

The continued scholarship of Chico State faculty will be recognized with posters throughout the library during the month of April. With one poster dedicated to each department and each author’s citations listed with a link to their work, we welcome the Chico State community to view the research that has been accomplished during the pandemic. Our aim is to engage students who are in the library as well in displaying their faculty’s research achievements

Participate and be recognized. Please take a few minutes and submit your research or creative work completed between:

January 1st, 2021 to December 31st, 2021

January 1st, 2020 to December 31st, 2020

We are excited to celebrate with you,

Jodi Shepherd, Interim Dean of the Meriam Library

Rose Garden Room

Dear faculty,

Do you know that faculty have a dedicated space in the Rose Garden Room (MLIB 459)?

As many of you have transitioned to in person classes, I want to make sure that you are aware of this wonderful space (with an amazing view of campus).

Faculty are welcome to use the Rose Garden Room Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for writing, reading, grading, or just to take a break.

Per Meriam Library policy, food is currently not allowed and masked are required.

It is not a coincidence that the photos featured on the Faculty Development website include me: I have always found the Rose Garden Room an incredibly refreshing space to be productive while meeting new colleagues, and I hope that you will come enjoy this space (and “say hi” to us next door)!

Let us know how you like to use the Rose Garden Room by adding a comment below!

Introducing the New FDEV Director, Chiara Ferrari

This Tuesday Tip is built around some personal background, so I hope you will indulge me.

Growing up and receiving most of my education in Italy meant that I was not exposed to a theoretical (or even a practical) framework that revolved around race and diversity. As a country that has “no significant history of immigration” (or so we used to believe), we relied primarily on the canonical works of European (read: white) authors.

It is thanks to many instructors, students, colleagues, and mentors that I realized the importance of expanding that canon. Most recently, I have embarked on the reading of bell hooks’ Teaching to Transgress. Starting in a new role on campus (while dealing with a global pandemic) does not allow for much time to read, and yet… the first few pages were a powerful reminder of the need to dedicate some time to our own growth, as educators.

“To educate is the practice of freedom,” hooks writes.  In such a simple sentence I found the essence of my love for teaching, as I was reminded of the empowering role that education has in the lives of our students. And in our own lives, for that matter.

hooks continues, stating that “we learned early that our devotion to learning, to a life of the mind, was a counter-hegemonic act, a fundamental way to resist every strategy of white racist colonization… my teachers were enacting a revolutionary pedagogy of resistance that was profoundly anticolonial.” I love to think that every time we enter a classroom we enact a revolutionary act of resistance.

FDEV and the Meriam Library are excited to share the news that Teaching to Transgress (hooks, 1994) is now available, as an eBook, to the entire campus community, through an unlimited license. We hope that you will take this opportunity to assign this reading in your classes, encouraging your students to engage in the courageous “practice of freedom.”

Learn A Language with Mango

Interested in learning a new language to enhance your cultural competency, prepare for an overseas trip, or communicate with your International students? Well, there’s an app for that. Chico State recently partnered with Mango Languages to provide faculty and students with a free (normally $18/month) full-access account. Mango (similar to Duolingo or Babbel) is a database with over 70 languages including Spanish, Thai, Punjabi, Latin, Korean, Greek, and many more. Mango can prepare learners for realistic conversations and strengthen everyday communication skills. You can read and hear words, speak words and play them back to yourself, and play comprehension games. There is even a built-in translator.

To access Mango, click on this Meriam Library link and then click on Mango Languages. Then, you can create a free account by clicking Sign Up. Enter your campus email address and a password (doesn’t have to be your campus password), click the free account, click on Chico State, and you’re all set.

There is also a Mango Languages mobile app available on Apple and Google Play stores.

Visit the Faculty Grading Space Open House This Friday

The grading/reading/writing space for faculty in MLIB 459 has new featured service to support your work. Aside from enjoying the most spectacular panoramic view on campus, faculty can now enjoy coffee, decaf, hot tea, and snacks in the room between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

To welcome you to the “Rose Garden Room” with these new amenities, the Office of Faculty Development and the Meriam Library will be hosting an open house this Friday, 9/13 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Drop in at your leisure to enjoy appetizers, juice shots, and prize giveaways.

Organize Reading Lists & Earn $250

Faculty have numerous methods of organizing reading lists for students. This can be confusing, especially when students have five or six different professors in a semester, all of whom place reading lists in various locations. The Meriam Library now offers an optional new tool called “Leganto (PDF)” (integrated directly into Bb or used as a standalone application) that helps you create dynamic online reading lists and provides seamless access for students. Leganto allows faculty to…

  • search the library directly to create links to articles
  • upload and organize your own content
  • view student usage of course content
  • include collaborators on course reading lists

To help you get started, the library is sponsoring a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) where you can develop your own course reading lists. The FLC will meet this semester for 90 minutes once per week for four weeks. Faculty who complete the FLC will receive $250. More information and start dates are on the application, which is due April 6, 2018. If you have questions or want more information, contact Jodi Shepherd.
