Dear faculty, 

I have greatly missed the energy and conversations that all of you bring to Faculty Development and I cannot wait to start offering programs that facilitate meaningful discussions about teaching & learning, research, and other faculty needs. 

As I welcome you back to campus, I want to share some news about this year, so you can begin reaching out to Faculty Development and participating in our initiatives. 

First, I hope you will start taking advantage of the Rose Garden Room, now that the 4th floor of the library is open again! The Rose Garden Room is located in MLIB 459 and it is open to faculty Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm. It is a wonderful space to read, grade, write, and meet wonderful colleagues.  

I also want to share that this semester we will launch a new FDEV Challenge, starting Wednesday September 7th, so check your email for a chance to receive a $50 gift certificate at the end of the semester! 

Lastly, I want to announce a new faculty learning community that we will offer this year, focusing on Universal Design for Learning. We are finalizing the call, and we will send it out in early September. We hope that you will consider applying, so stay tuned for more information! 

Welcome back, dear faculty, I cannot wait to see all of you around campus! 

Rose Garden Room

Dear faculty,

Do you know that faculty have a dedicated space in the Rose Garden Room (MLIB 459)?

As many of you have transitioned to in person classes, I want to make sure that you are aware of this wonderful space (with an amazing view of campus).

Faculty are welcome to use the Rose Garden Room Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for writing, reading, grading, or just to take a break.

Per Meriam Library policy, food is currently not allowed and masked are required.

It is not a coincidence that the photos featured on the Faculty Development website include me: I have always found the Rose Garden Room an incredibly refreshing space to be productive while meeting new colleagues, and I hope that you will come enjoy this space (and “say hi” to us next door)!

What: Viewing party for the livestreamed 2018 Graduation Initiative 2025 Symposium keynote and afternoon presentations focused on improving degree completion and addressing equity (see below). FDEV will provide coffee, hot tea, and snacks so we can listen and discuss how the presentations relate to our campus. You will never believe who…

Stopped by the Faculty Grading Oasis during finals week and finished all their grading—You! Come see us during finals week for open space, coffee, snacks, tech support from TLP, and assistance (FERPA compliant) from our student staff.

It is that time of year. Grading is piling up, and each piece of click-bait you see looks more enticing as you try and avoid the regular task of finishing your grading. With that in mind, our “reasons to visit” the Grading Oasis is inspired by the click-bait you should avoid:

  1. Genius uses this one weird trick–to finish all their grading. Seriously, going somewhere new and having some help makes a difference.
  2. You won’t believe what this instructor looks like now–happy once they have come by the Grading Oasis for coffee and snacks. We buy, and you thrive.
  3. Healthy professors do this one thing to stay young–they get help with their grading. Our students help with blinded grading, alphabetizing, anything FERPA allows them to assist with. TLP help is two doors away!
  4. Warren Buffet is warning teachers not to–procrastinate on finishing grading. Avoid the artificial extension of your classwork into the summer by doing it soon.
  5. Shocking photos of polar bear attacks-okay I don’t have a tie in for this one, I just like polar bear videos.

Get it Done!

Many of us will do anything to avoid grading. If you have a to-do list you need to get through and avoiding grading is that push you need to clean the gutters, finish your shopping, or clean the grout in your bathroom please disregard this email. If you are someone who actually wants to get your grading done read on!

The Faculty Grading Oasis is open and we want to help you finish your grading. Here is what we have to offer.

  1. Fresh coffee, creamer, tea, and snacks.
  2. Space away from your office where no one will knock on your door, and you can get grading done.
  3. Help from our student staff Monday-Thursday 8-5. They can alphabetize exams, grade exams with direction (as long as the student name is hidden), and help with clerical tasks.
  4. Accountability from each other and from admin extraordinaire Michelle Wysocki, who comes in to MLIB 459 to peer at you with her judging eyes if you are off task.

Good News!

In lieu of a normal Teaching Tip we are sharing two pieces of good news for faculty across campus.

First, we have great news regarding MLIB 459, also known as the Rose Garden room. Library Dean Patrick Newell worked with Interim Provost Mike Ward and Interim Dean of Graduate Studies Sharon Barrios over the summer to open up multi-use, multi-purpose spaces for collaboration in the Meriam Library. There are more plans in development, but as of Fall 2016 MLIB 459 is a space for faculty to meet and collaborate during working hours. The space is beautiful, bright, quiet, and welcoming to faculty who want to work outside their offices. It is adjacent to the Faculty Development Office which means you can get a cup of coffee, learn about campus programs, and get to work. The space is secure enough you can leave your laptop open and not have to worry about leaving to use the restroom or get a snack from the BMU. The same space is open to graduate students after hours and is soon to be bustling with late night thesis writing. We want to extend a sincere thanks to Dean Newell, Interim Dean Barrios, and Interim Provost Ward for making this possible and invite faculty to come to MLIB 459 to do great work.

Second, we also want to pass along a more traditional tip in relation to this year’s Book in Common “My Life on The Road” by Gloria Steinem. Dr. Sara Cooper is providing the campus with a valuable resource: teaching notes on integrating this powerful book into your curriculum. Check out this section of the CELT page for regular synopsis updates, discussion questions, and other resources. This work is a wonderful guide if you want to draw in themes and conversation about the book and are looking for expert guidance.
